Story[]

In Pasadena, Texas on October 30, 1988, 10-year-old Jacob Walsh and his best friend and neighbor, 9-year-old Kale Parker, were playing outside. Kale showed Jacob the volcano that his father, David, helped him make. They wanted to use Jacob's skateboard ramp as a platform for it. They tried using matches against their parents' orders, but it didn't work.

Jacob and Kale kept trying to get a fire started in the volcano using matches and leaves while Jacob's grandmother, Lydia Walsh, worked just inside the house. As Kale prepared the volcano, Jacob found a can of gasoline and brought it out to the ramp. He poured it on the volcano, and it exploded. Kale got burned and screamed in pain. Lydia saw that he was on fire and yelled to Jacob's father, Terry, that he was so.

Jacob performed stop, drop, and roll on Kale until the fire went out. Terry then ran outside and grabbed him. He told Jacob to go get David and his wife, Kathy. He knocked on their door and they ran out with him. Kale screamed in pain as Terry handed him to David. Terry told them that he got burned and Kathy immediately dialed 911. Her call came in at 9:45am while David comforted Kale.

Pasadena police officers and paramedics James Kelton and Mark Donavan arrived. Terry and Jacob also came to see if Kale was okay. Kelton and Donavan then proceeded to help relieve the pain of his burns. They then put him into the ambulance and continued to work on him. He was rushed to a nearby parking lot, where a special helicopter landing zone had been set up. Jacob felt guilty that he burned him. Terry told him not to worry.

At the hospital, doctors proceeded to clean Kale's burns, which prevents contamination to them that can lead to infection. He recovered quickly. In the year and a half since the incident, he underwent a series of painful skin grafts. Fire Marshal Bill Yearout believes that he survived because Jacob acted quickly and knew what to do. He then said that if Jacob didn't perform stop, drop, and roll on him, he would not have survived. Terry and his wife, Renee, were proud of Jacob for saving him.
